What Psychology Can Do For You--And What It Can't

Because pyschology can contribute to your life in many ways, whether you plan to work in the field or not. Here are a few things psychology can do for you.

Make you a more informed person. Because psychology plays a large role in contemporary society, being a well-informed person requires knowing something about psychological methods and findings.

Satisfy your curiosity about human nature. Along with other social sciences, literature, history, and philosophy, it can help you better understand yourself and others.

Help you increase your control over your life. Psychology may help you handle your emotions, improve your memory, and eliminate unwanted habits.

Help you on the job. Anyone who works as a nurse, doctor, religious adviser, police officer, teacher, waiters, bank tellers or any job requireing customer service or predict people's behavior.

Give you insights into political and social issues. Crime, drug abuse, discrimination, and war are not only social issues but also psychological ones.. Psychological knowledge cannot solve the complex political, social, and ethical problems that plague every society, but it can help citizens make informed judgments about them.

Help you become a more critical thinker. You will be less likely to accept glib generalizations that are unsupported by evidence. You will make better decisions about the claims and arguments you hear everyday (Buy This - Believe That).

Psychology can't tell you the meaning of life. A philosophy of life requires not only knowledge but also reflection and a willingness to learn from life's experiences.

Psychological understanding doesn't relieve people of responsibility for their faults and misdeeds.

Psychology will not provide you with simple answers to complex questions, rather offers findings from many perspectives, which the critical thinker will try to evaluate and integrate.
