Thoughts On Crime Mapping

Crime Mapping and the policing of Democratic Societies

I would make crime mapping an internal accountability system to improve the quality of police services as an effective way for police and the public to define the patterns of crime. The maps develop a common picture of crime in an area, incorporate other information that can help explain crime patterns and suggest solutions, and over time monitor changes. Also, use crime mapping to analyze health data and environmental conditions with demographic changes, various enforcement strategies and other social phenomonen that affect crime.

In the event responsibility for crime reduction is split among agencies, I would use a cross-jurisdictional mapping application that can link several agencies that operate at city, town, village, and county levels to identify crime patterns that stretch across jurisdictional boundaries, and to generally improve coordination, encouraging communication across police agencies to identify and solve crime problems.
