Police In-Car Information Systems

The in-car information systems that has revolutionized patrolman out in the field is phenomenal utilizing today’s technology. For example, they can get instant access to an individuals’ identity with a quick imprint of a suspect’s two fingers put on a handheld device which is connected to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). In the past, the identity of a murderer/rapist/convict could have taken years to receive, meanwhile without probable cause to make an arrest immediately, these people continue to commit crimes until caught.

Critical information is being put into databases from software by law enforcement agencies throughout the country, from local departments to the FBI that is a solution for law enforcement agencies to effectively manage information of arrests, citations, crash report, investigator notes plus a master name index search capabilities. This information is easily accessed on laptops in the field. This allows law enforcement to enter and recieve reports instantly, thus being in a position to act efficiently in real time. Police can monitor trends, identify hot spots, and measure personnel performance by pooling statistical data. Effective collection of criminal activity data is crucial to quality law enforcement.

To have the ability to effectively combat crime and respond to terrorist threats in real time, the use of advanced technologies has undoubtedly reduced violent crime, promote officer safety, and impacted public safety, improving our criminal justice system.

No matter how much the world changes and new technology is introduced, it will always be the police officer that the people look to in times of crisis, and will be the one to rise to the occasion.
