Managing Information Systems and Communication Technology
As a business owner, the importance of managing key resources such as information is not just a by-product of conducting business; rather, it fuels business and can be the critical factor in determining the success or failure of a business. Businesses utilize information resources to solve technical problems, analyze management problems, applying quality standards to production, comparing cost against budgets, and keeping records on absences and turnover. To maximize the usefulness of information, a business must manage it correctly, just as it manages other resources, Information resources are also crucial in planning. It can be used to decide on products and markets for the next 5 to 10 years. The internet and related communication technologies would change the way a business would operate in that you would have more flexible operations, letting businesses offer customers greater variety and faster delivery cycles. Increased collaboration, both among internal units and with outside firms. Networked systems make it cheaper and easier to contact everyone. Also lets collaborators exchange ideas, plan strategy, share customer information, and otherwise coordinate efforts, even if their respective facilities are far apart. With networked systems instantaneous information is accessible and useful. It can be used for planning, leading, directing, and controlling operations. Also improves management processes allowing managers to better coordinate companywide performance. The internet and related communication technologies would greatly increase the ability for profits by enhancing performance and productivity by serving two functions: By providing coordination and communication within the firm and speeding up transactions with other firms. Electronic conferencing would allow groups of people to communicate simultaneously from various locations via e-mail or phone. Groupware is software that can connect group members for e-mail distribution, electronic meeting, message storing, appointments and schedules, and group writing. Linked by groupware people can collaborate from their own desktop PC's even if they are remotely located. Video-Conferencing would allow employees to see one another on video screens while the Conference is in progress. Teleconferencing would eliminate travel and thus saves money.
