Fine Art
Reasons why Jackson Pollock’s Convergence is a work of “fine art” as compared to an arbitrary composition of paint. Let’s start with exploring the definition of “Fine Arts”. FINE ARTS is the name given to a whole group of human activities. The art of architecture, sculpture, painting, music and poetry constitutes this group. The fine arts are among the arts of which man minister through his love of beauty. If any art fulfils both these purposes at once, it is called fine art. Another account is fine art is the arts of man which spring from his impulse to make certain things in certain ways for the sake, first, of a special kind of pleasure. Found summarized under the head “Aesthetics” is the nature of this impulse, and the several grounds of these pleasures which are subjects that have given rise to a formidable body of speculation and discussion. The idea of art only includes phenomena Premedi-of which man is deliberately the cause. Fine arts structures give pleasure by the aspect of surfaces and intervals, by variety and relation of contours, color and enrichment, contrast of light and shade, strength, fitness and, harmony and proportion of parts (The 1911 Edition Encyclopedia n.d.) Finally, “Fine Arts are a creation of beautiful objects: artistic work that is meant to be appreciated for its own sake, rather than to serve some useful function” ( MSN Encarta, n.d.). In view of the above definition of “Fine Arts”, Jackson Pollock’s Convergence can be considered a work of fine art in that he was deeply influenced by the Surrealist notion of automatism, the direct and unmediated expression of the self. His abstract paintings are aesthetic in its intention and were meant to be received as an object of fine art. Affected by surrealism, he moved toward a highly abstract art in order to express feeling rather than illustrate feeling (Fact Monster (People), n.d.). It is obvious after viewing many of his paintings such as Shimmering Substance, 1946; Cathedral, 1947; Lavendar Mist#1, 1950 and Blue Poles #2, 1952, Pollock expresses himself purely through the use of form and color, strength, variety and relation of contours, and harmony and proportion of parts. In conclusion with the definition of “Fine Arts” to mean the idea of art only includes phenomena Premedi-of which man is deliberately the cause. And “Fine Arts are a creation of beautiful objects: artistic work that is meant to be appreciated for its own sake, rather than to serve some useful function” ( MSN Encarta, n.d.), I believe Jackson Pollock’s paintings could only be considered just that “Fine Art” as opposed to an arbitrary composition of paint, “Arbitrary” meaning (not seen in a meaningful context). "When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of "get acquainted" period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well."
