Diagnosis of Pedophilias/Child Molestation
There are several lists of criteria by The American Psychiatric Association for a diagnosis of a pedophilia. · At least 16 years of age. · Have sexual fantasies or behavior toward a child 13 years or younger. · Have sexual fantasies described above for more than 6 months. Pedophilia’s who sexually abuse boys start the earliest. Although men with pedophilia who molest girls have their first child victim slightly later, a significant number said that they also molested a child before they were 10 years old, another 32 percent began to molest when they were between ages 10 and 15. Theories of early childhood experience and sexual fantasies In entirely different theoretical psychiatric orientations came independently to identical conclusions, two groups of scientists came to the same conclusion. When two different scientists from two different perspectives come to the same conclusion, it is very rare. Their findings were, when the older child’s repeated sexual fantasies of much younger children, shapes that child’s adult sexual interest in children. Children’s consent to sexual abuse Because they are children, they don’t have the ability to consent to interactions of a serious nature with adults. They have no consent in anything in their life being considered a juvenile. Their agreement to an interaction concerning sex does not constitute consent. The adult’s role is to protect the child from danger. Sixty five percent of child molesters fail to recognize this important fact. Statistical Findings concerning child molestation · Demographics: Child molesters match the US population in education, percentage married or formerly married and religious groups. · Ethnicity: Child molesters occur in various ethnic groups. · High Risk Children: Only 10 percent · Children in the family: 68 percent sexually abuse children in their own families. · Children in the social circle: 40 percent abuse children of families in their social circle. Effects of sexual abuse There are short-term negative effects of sexual abuse that impact a child’s life. The most common is posttraumatic stress disorder. This is a clinical syndrome with symptoms falling into three categories: physiological hyper-reactivity; avoidance or withdrawal of the event; and reenactment of the event. Posttraumatic stress disorder can become a chronic problem affecting the child well into adulthood if not treated effectively. Children, who are sexually abused, when compared to children who have not been, engage in more sexualized behavior. A research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, health problems including heart disease were increased by adverse childhood events, including sexual abuse.
