Child Molestation - We Must Protect Our Children

The child who becomes the target of sexual abuse is the victim. Such a child lives a nightmare, trapped with guilt, prematurely awakened sexuality and terror. The protector is also the oppressor, and the reality is intolerable.
Our child protection system is nothing more than a collection of self-protecting agencies, each more concerned with its own statistics that its mandated duty. A pedophile is an individual with recurrent sexually arousing fantasies and urges involving children. He is as dangerous as cancer. His presence becomes known only by the horrendous damage he leaves. A pedophile may be a judge, scout leader, police officer, an athletic coach, religious counselor. He is protected by our unwillingness to confront the truth, and also our ignorance of his presence. Because sexual crimes against our children seem so grotesquely abnormal, our explanation of this is “he must be mentally ill” or is helpless in the grip of a force beyond his or her control. This very natural reaction is the barrier to our primary biological and ethical mandate: “the protection of our children”.
Cases of child sexual abuse, especially when the perpetrator comes from within the child’s circle of trust is far more complex. The truth is as simple as it is terrifying: sickness is a condition. Early diagnosis of this condition is important. Treatment with medicines and therapies is effective. Evaluation for possible pedophilias is:
Teenagers and adults concerned that they may have a sexual interest in children.
Children who sexually interact with children at least five years younger.
Children who have been molested.
Exhibitionists.
Voyeurs.
A child that has been accused of sexually molesting a younger child.
Any teenager or adult convicted of sexually molesting a child.

Conclusion
Tests have suggested that child molesters occur throughout the United States population and are not isolated to individuals with specific marital, educational, social, economic or racial backgrounds. We must identify the pedophile and implement treatment as rapidly as possible, because, most clearly, those who meet the medical criteria of pedophilia molest 88 percent of the victims and commit 95 percent of child molestations. Efforts should focus on prevention and therapeutic intervention for child victims. To minimize further helplessness, distress and trauma, the legal system must be more child-victim friendly.
